Jim Goorman enters the Michigan
High School Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame with 44 years of
experience across several sports including basketball, baseball
and softball. Jim is perhaps best known for coaching basketball
where his record totals over 500 wins, 3 State Runner-Ups and 5
State Championships. Jim has many Coach of the Year honors, has
been inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan
Hall of Fame and is currently the winningest basketball coach in
the Muskegon area.
In addition to coaching, Jim has
demonstrated a love for the game of basketball and mentoring
youth, running youth camps for 40 years. He has also founded the
American Youth Basketball Tour where he served as President or
Vice President for 22 years. Jim continues to be involved in the
sport as an official which he has done for the past 47 years.
Jim is described as the perfect
combination of leader, mentor, educator and colleague. Jim creates
relationships with his athletes that allow him to teach them more
than just how to play a game and has garnered the respect of all
who interact with him. A common nickname for Jim is Gip, inspiring
the “Win one for the Gipper” demonstrating just how much Jim means
to those who take the court or field for him.
